We are excited to announce a Sandpit Workshop, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, 10am Wednesday 1st – 3pm Friday 3rd July 2026.
During the first full year of the ARIA Forecasting Tipping Points Programme, there has been extensive discussion of what an Early Warning System might look like and who it might serve. Several FTP projects have been working on innovative methods for identifying precursor processes and variables which would give pre-warning of North Atlantic subpolar gyre tipping points, and some have already obtained promising preliminary results.
We therefore believe it is timely to bring representatives of the whole FTP community together to scope out a more concrete picture of the essential components of a subpolar gyre tipping Early Warning System, including the scientific and policy advances that would be required for implementation. Our Sandpit will build on previous discussions within the programme, and its outputs will inform the FTP Programme Review taking place over the summer of 2026.
We would ideally like participation from as many of the projects as possible, as well as representation from the Working Groups and the FTP Programme Team, so please consider attending! If you wish to attend, please register here and fill in the information and submit no later than 5th June 2026.
